On 22 March, on behalf of the Government of Flanders, Minister-president Geert Bourgeois offered his deepest condolences to the victims of the attacks in Brussels and Zaventem and their relatives.

“I am shocked by these horrific and cowardly acts, committed in the heart of our European democracy. My first thoughts go out to the victims and families affected by these attacks at Zaventem airport and in Brussels town center.

Now is the time to stand united as a community and to emphasize our common values: freedom, democracy and respect for the rule of law. It’s imperative we do not surrender to those who wish to destroy these fundamental values. I call out to all citizens to stand united and support each other in these difficult times. All buildings of the Government of Flanders will have their flags flown half-staff. I would also like to give a big thank you to the security and emergency services and all those who spontaneously came to the aid of others.”

The Minister-president also expressed his sincere appreciation for the international show of solidarity from many governments and regional governments from all over the world. “these atrocious and cowardly attacks struck the very heart of Europe, but also the heart of our European democracy. I would like to express my appreciation for the international support shown at this tragic and trying time. It is paramount for the international community to stand shoulder to shoulder.”

On 23 March the Flemish ministers visited the Beursplein in Brussels, the place where people come together to show their support and to mourn. Minister-president Bourgeois invited the representatives of different religions to join them in the commemoration of the victims.

All official activities of the Government of Flanders and the Department of Foreign Affairs have been suspended due to the three days of national mourning.
